22nd Annual Creativity Festivity

22nd Annual Creativity Festivity
Designing the Future
April 5–16

The 2016 Creativity Festivity theme was “Designing the Future” and celebrates children’s imaginative work in art, theatre, poetry and music. Throughout the two week celebration, DAC hosted events and opportunities for local youth to share their work with the greater arts community in Durango.

The schedule included an exhibit featuring artwork from local elementary, middle school and high school students hung in the Barbara Conrad Gallery at DAC. DAC Applause! students performed two primetime productions of SchoolHouse Rock Live! Jr. and two additional after school outreach performances in the DAC Theatre. The Annual High School Poetry Slam in the DAC Theatre featured students competing from Animas High School and Durango High School and Grand Central, the high school band of Stillwater Music. DAC also hosted our Congressional District’s Annual High School Art Competition alongside the Creativity Festivity exhibit in the Barbara Conrad Gallery with awards presented by US Representative for the 3rd District of Colorado, Congressman Scott Tipton.

Since the launch of the first Creativity Festivity in 1992, DAC has strived to celebrate and nurture learning through the arts.

DAC produces Creativity Festivity for the community to experience and access at free or very low cost admissions thanks to the generous funding of community partners, including Durango School District 9-R, Durango Friends of the Arts, and the Community Foundation of Southwest Colorado.

DAC is honored to serve as the host of our Congressional District’s annual high school art competition, which will be featured in conjunction with our annual Creativity Festivity exhibit in the Barbara Conrad Gallery.  The 2016 jurors include Chad Colby (Chair, Fort Lewis College Department of Art & Design), Andrea Martens (Director, Fort Lewis College Art Gallery and Lecturer) and Cristie Scott (Executive Director, Durango Arts Center).

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.

Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.
