The Durango Arts Center strives to provide excellent art instruction in a cooperative and inspiring environment. All classes are held in our new and improved Education Studio above the Gallery.

No refunds can be given for missed classes or withdrawals after the registration deadline. Return the registration form by mail or register in person at 802 E. 2nd Avenue.

Free Screening of Art 21, season 6 in the education studio at DAC

May 30 and May 31 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Art in the 21st Century is a PBS award winning series on contemporary artists. Contemporary art is relevant to all audiences providing a rich resource through which to consider current ideas and rethink the familiar. The four themes explored in Season 6 are Balance, Boundaries, History, and Change interviewing 13 different artists.

 

 
 

 

SATURDAY WORKSHOPS

 

PEX PLATE INTAGLIO PRINTMAKING

For Adults and Teens, taught by Denver-visiting artist Jennifer Ghormley
June 18, 19, 20, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Plex plate Intaglio, or drypoint, is a traditional Intaglio printmaking process that does not use any acid, solvents or processing. The plates are made by scratching or carving images into a soft plate called polycarbonate. Students will learn how to print a handmade plate in perfect registration and build a color image through multiple plate layering on these thin, see-through plates. Cost is $200. OPEN STUDIOS

 

PORTRAIT GROUP For Adults and teens
Every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This non-instructional studio session is with a live clothed model in the same pose all three hours. Artists bring their own materials. The DAC provides the studio, model, and easels. Cost is $10 per session for DAC members and $20 for non-members. No preregistration is required.

FIGURE DRAWING For Adults
Every Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

This is a non-instructional studio session with a nude model. Artists bring their own materials. The Cost is $10 per session for DAC members and $15 for non-members. No preregistration is required. Use the North Entrance to access the Education Studio at night.

OPEN STUDIO
Every Friday from 3 to 5 p.m.

Free for DAC members and students taking classes at the DAC. Come enjoy our large, bright studio to spread out and work on your own projects.

 

Summer Saturday Workshops with artist Ruth Bloom

 

Drawing with Ink
July 14 | Adults and Teens | 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. | $30
Practice your observation skills using Japanese Sumi ink. Learn how to draw with tone, from light to dark using washes of ink. Practice brushwork to describe forms and mark making. We will also discuss composition of the picture plane.

Watercolor Painting
July 21 | Adults and Teens | 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. | $50
This workshop will use the still life learn how to mix and apply colors on watercolor paper. You will learn to paint from light to dark, lay washes, and about drawing and seeing. This class will include color theory. If you have pan or tube watercolors or brushes, please bring them to class. Bring a bag lunch.

Drawing with Ink
August 4 | Adults and Teens | 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. | $30

Book Art & Printmaking
August 4 | Adults and Teens 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. | $30
Students will have a large variety of activities focused on hand printing and using a small printmaking press in this workshop. Learn to create a stamp and carve a linoleum plate. We will print sheets creating a portfolio of paper and cards. Through cut, paste and design create a dramatic “Flag” book.

Batik and Fabric Resist
August 11 | Adults and Teens | 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. | $50
Explore drawing with melted beeswax on watercolor papers and immerse in a vats of color, folding and weave it into a work of art. We will then move on to working with fabric. Using beeswax with natural minerals and Indigo dye, we will to explore the age old art of resist on fabric. You are welcome to bring white silk or linen to work on. We will have a bolt of cotton to use in class. Students will learn to fold and tie to resist the dyes. Shibori, an ancient Japanese technique, will be introduced (folding, clamping, binding and sewing) on the fabric before dying. Students will view a visual presentation of batik examples from around the globe and have the use of four copper Balinese stamps used for decorative motifs. We will break for lunch, so please bring a bag lunch or your lunch money.
