February 1 – 25: Sweethearts of the Arts in the Barbara Conrad Gallery. Sweethearts of the Arts Valentine Fair, January 31 - February 7.

February 10: Deadline for submissions for 10-Minute Play Contest (Entries must be postmarked on or before February 18.)

February 1 & 2: "Kids Follies": This ever-popular fun-filled family version of the Follies returns to the DAC Theater, at 5 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for seniors, students and children.

The Durango Arts Center Education Program

 

The Durango Arts Center strives to provide excellent art instruction in a cooperative and inspiring environment. All classes are held in our new and improved Education Studio above the Gallery.

No refunds can be given for missed classes or withdrawals after the registration deadline. Return the registration form by mail or register in person at 802 E. 2nd Avenue.

Ongoing Sessions

 

Open Studio

Every Friday from 3 – 5 p.m.

Free for DAC members and students taking classes at the DAC. Come and enjoy our large, bright studio to spread out and work on your own projects.

Portrait Group

Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Upstairs at the Durango Arts Center Education Studio

This is a drop in non-instructional studio session for artists who want to work on a single pose for three hours. Artists need to bring their own drawing or painting materials. The Durango Arts Center provides a clothed model, easels, and studio.

Cost per session is $10 for DAC members and $15 for non-members.

This is a drop-in, non-instructional studio session for artists who want to develop their skills drawing from a live, nude model.  Artists need to bring their own materials. The Durango Arts Center provides the studio, model, and easels. Cost is $10 per session for DAC members and $15 for non-members.

 

 

January

Beginning Block Printing taught by Amy Grogan (For adults and teens)
Thursdays, 6:30 – 8 p.m., for 4 weeks, from Jan 19 – Feb 9

Learn one of the oldest methods of duplicating an image with a history of 500+ years. Students will explore the techniques of speedy cut block printing including designing & carving images, color mixing inks, hand cutting paper & printing without a press. Smaller prints & custom cards will be the focus. Cost is $50, plus a $20 materials fee.

 

Pastel Painting the Landscape taught by Amy Grogan (For adults and teens)
Tuesdays, 1 – 4 p.m., for 5 weeks, from Jan 10 – Feb 7

Explore the luscious palette of soft pastels in this hands on class geared for students with some prior drawing experience. The focus will be on the stunning landscape of our region working from photos indoors. Amy will share her successful techniques that she has learned over the last 15 years. Although a basic understanding of color theory is helpful, students with limited experience will be welcomed. Cost is $125 for five classes. A materials list will be mailed upon registration.

 

Beginning Drawing taught by Christine Trout (For adults and teens)
Mondays, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., for 5 weeks, from Jan 23 – Feb 27 (no class 2/23)

This class works through a well refined sequence of steps that teach the skills of drawing and seeing. By developing the “artist’s eye” and hands, students will build confidence in creating depth on a two dimensional surface. No drawing experience needed. Cost is $100 for five classes and includes all materials.

 

Drawing Workshop taught by Christine Trout (For adults and teens)
Tuesdays 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., for 5 weeks, from Jan 24 – Feb 28 (no class 2/21)

This class is for intermediate to advanced students. The goal of this class is to support students in their growth of drawing skills and techniques. There will be new lessons as well as an opportunity for each student to explore and develop their skill and interest individually. We will offer teacher and peer feedback in a supportive and collaborative environment. Prerequisite:  Beginning Drawing and Drawing 2 or a solid background in drawing. Cost is $100 for five classes. A materials list will be mailed upon registration.

 

Beginning Acrylic Painting taught by Christine Trout (For adults and teens) 
Thursdays, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., for 6 weeks, from Jan 26 – March 8 (no class 2/23)

This class introduces students to the techniques needed to have a successful painting.  We will explore color mixing, controlling color, keeping colors clean, and learn how to see a color portrayed successfully in art. Our goal is to complete two paintings; one on paper and one on canvas. Prerequisite: Color Theory and Beginning Drawing or a solid background in both.

Cost is $150 for six classes. A materials list will be mailed upon registration.

 

Intermediate Acrylic Painting taught Joan Levine Russell (For adults and teens)
Fridays, 9 a.m. – noon, for 5 weeks, from Jan 20 – Feb 17

This class is a continuation of beginning painting with more in depth techniques and color explorations. Pre-requisite: Beginning Acrylic Painting or previous painting experiencse.

Cost is $125 for five classes. A materials list will be mailed upon registration.

 

 

Saturday Workshops

Mixed Media Collage facilitated by Nancy Harris (For adults and teens)

Basketmaking with Karen Aldrich (For adults and teens)
Saturday, Feb 4,  10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Participants will create a small Valentines Candy Basket in this workshop.  No previous experience necessary. Class size limited to 6 students.  Cost is $50 with a $10 materials fee paid to the instructor.

Handmade Cards with Pat Senecal(For ages 12 and up)
Saturday, Feb 11,  10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Create beautiful Valentines cards with pockets for a gift.   Experiment with a variety of folding techniques and various paper and materials. No previous experience necessary.  Cost is $15 and includes all materials.

  Stained Glass Workshop by Will Foster (For adults)

Saturday, March 17,   1 – 4 p.m.

Artist Will Foster will teach this introductory workshop where students will learn how to manipulate stained glass using the foil technique. Students will create ornaments and other small objects as they practice the glass techniques. Students will be handling sharp objects and are encouraged to bring work gloves. Cost is $45, plus a $15 materials fee paid to the instructor. Registration deadline is March 10. Class is limited to 6 students.

Intermediate Stained Glass with Will Foster (for adults and teens)

Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Students with a basic knowledge of stained glass foil technique will create a lamp shade in this twelve hour workshop. Cost is $100 plus a $20 materials fee paid to the instructor.
