Classes and Workshops for Kids and Teens
For Kids:
Tween Painting (for ages 9-11)
Tuesdays, 4-5:30 p.m., taught by Meredith Rose, March 6- April 24 (no class 4/10)
This seven-week class will focus on acrylic painting techniques and processes. DAC supplies all materials. Cost is $120 and includes all materials. Scholarships are available thanks to Durango Friends of the Arts.
Kite making
(for everyone {kids 8 and under must be accompanied by a helper})
Saturday, April 28, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., taught by Paul Pennington
Learn to make, decorate and fly a Nepalese kite, as well as learn the safety, history, anatomy, and variety of kites. Cost is $50 and includes all materials.
SUMMER ART CAMPS
The Durango Arts Center will hold three summer camps for kids this year. Local teaching artists will teach these dynamic art camps. Cost is $200 per camp and includes all materials. Just bring your enthusiasm and a sack lunch. Enrollment is limited to 10 students. Registration deadline is one week prior to the start of camp.
Exploring Art: Our Amazing Planet
Age 6-9
Time: 10 a.m. to 3p.m.
July 16-20
Cast a bug out of plaster, build a tree out of clay, paint the night sky, and experiment with a variety of art mediums while exploring our amazing planet in this fun week-long camp.
Exploring Art: Legends and Myths Around the World
Age 8-12
Time: 10a.m. to 3p.m.
Aug 6-10
Legends and myths from around the world help create some of the most interesting works of art. Through clay, paint, music, and theater games, we will explore stories of ghosts, Kachina dolls, gargoyles, Cyclops and much more.
Exploring Art: Contemporary Practices in Art
Age 12-17
Time: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Aug 13-16
This fun four day intensive will focus on contemporary practices in ceramics, drawing and painting. View works by contemporary artists; discuss mediums and techniques used in studio practices as well as the ideas and philosophies that inspire the work.
DAC members receive a 10% discount. Class limit is 10 students. Registration forms for spring 2012 are available for download here.

GOAL
Founded in 2003, Girls’ Opportunity for Arts and Leadership program (GOAL) is an educational program of the Durango Arts Center designed for girls entering 6th through 9th grades. The mission of the GOAL program is to nurture and support skill development in the arts while promoting the processes of self-inquiry and self-expression in adolescent girls.

This dynamic visual arts program nurtures creativity and leadership. Using the visual arts as a framework, the arts curriculum addresses skills in relationships, personal identity, goal setting, problem solving and independent thinking.
