The DAC docents is an all-volunteer committee that offers two programs: tours of gallery exhibits for adults and children and the Art in the School program for elementary school children and other organizations. For information about the docent program, see below or write docents@durangoarts.org. Durango Friends of the Arts is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that has given over $380,000 in grants to visual and performing arts programs in the Durango area. 100% of the money raised for the grant fund goes back to the community.
Docent Tours of Exhibits in the Barbara Conrad Gallery
Join DAC’s docents at 3 p.m. every Friday for a tour and discussion of the current exhibit in the Barbara Conrad Gallery. These tours are free and the public is invited to attend. For more information, call Mary Puller, DAC’s exhibits director, at 259-2606.
“Art in the Schools”
This program is for children from kindergarten through fifth grade. The docent program is presented in the classroom with information about the artists and their work. Then the docents let the children work on their own, developing an art project that reflects the artist that was presented.
Tours of DAC Exhibits in the Barbara Conrad Gallery
This program provides students with an orientation to gallery behavior to help them gain a level of comfort in attending gallery exhibits throughout life. It provides a way for students to engage the art that they see and experience; the docents help the students learn to “look” at art. The program provides interactive learning experiences and hands-on art projects.
Call (970) 259-2606 or email docents@durangoarts.org to schedule a date and time for a docent visit.
The DAC Board has honored the docents at a reception at the Art Center for their work in the community. Marta Snow and Sandra Mapel gave a short presentation on the work they do as docents. Marta also announced that the docents were introducing a new artist this year. We are very pleased to add Alexander “Sandy” Calder (1889-1976) to our presentations. Calder is an exciting multifaceted artist. The docents are working on hanging mobile ideas for the children, using recycled items and found objects. They asked the board to drop off wine corks and other small items the children could use for the mobiles. Wire, string, fishing line and small rings that the mobiles can be hung properly would be greatly appreciated. The docents provide all the materials used in the art projects. Recycling in art will also be discussed.
