Artist of the Month: Joanie Bauer Hupp

“I’m drawn to detail . . . all of the beautifully etched lines found in nature.  Much time is spent studying my subject, before I even pick up a pencil.  I stylize the organic shapes, softening them a bit, allowing them to flow across the gallery-wrapped canvas.  Color is usually on the earthy, muted side, and compliments nicely, to the addition of metallic colors.  Multiple layers of acrylic paint add to the overall smoothness of the finished piece, eliminating the brushstrokes that I find distracting.  I use repetition of line to create visual texture, by first outlining the shapes in metallic gold, then with black ink – my signature style of line-work – which adds a much needed sense of rhythm and balance to the finished painting.” – Joanie Bauer Hupp
