Online Exhibit: Kit Frost Bio
From Kit Frost:
Inspired by Eliot Porter’s photographs in American Places, and A Place No One Knew, I traveled for the first time to the West in the early eighties. I hiked the Grand Canyon, rafted Cataract Canyon, visited Canyon de Chelly and many trading posts on the Navajo Reservation. I was forever changed by the experience. The expansive and exotic landscapes, the red rock, the Colorado river canyons and the sky seduced me.
I was an art teacher in New Jersey at the time and spent the next 10 years winding down from that work before I got on a plane and headed west again. My goal was to see the places to which Eliot’s photos had opened my eyes. I knew one day I would move here, settle here, belong here.
I moved to Durango in 1995. It’s home. It’s home base. I live where I play. It’s the center of the world of land and sky; the center of the world of art and photography.
I still travel as often as I can to explore the wonders of the West. My trips in 2011 were along parts of the Colorado Trail, to Grand Gulch, Zion, Arches and Capitol Reef National Parks, a week in Ice Lakes Basin, and my yearly float down the San Juan River.
Seasonal trips to Santa Fe expose me to the actual prints of Eliot Porter, Brett Weston, Ansel Adams, and Christopher Burkett. With gloved hands, I am allowed to inspect the details of their work. Inspired by these photographers and my favorite painters, I always return to Durango ready for my next artistic adventure.
I challenge myself each time I’m in the field to find my way, my voice. I spent 20 years teaching black and white photography to high school kids who yearned to find their voice, and 15 years teaching at the Maine Photographic Workshops. Currently, I spend most weekends teaching others how to find their vision. Together, we explore this wonderful planet in our neighboring playgrounds.
It was just a few years ago that my work hung right alongside Eliot Porter’s. Before his death in 1989, I was able to speak to Eliot. I told him about how he inspired me and changed my life.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine for myself the life that I am living.
