   The Durango Arts Center   DAC Kids Summer Arts 2010

All classes are held in the teaching studios at Durango Arts Center at 802 East 2nd. Avenue.  No refunds after registration deadlines or for missed classes.  A $20 cancellation fee will be charged for withdrawals.  No refunds for withdrawals after registration deadlines.  The DAC reserves the right to cancel any class that does not make its minimum enrollment.  The World is Not Flat    Ages 7 to 10       Cost:  $120

June 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 (8 classes)    9:00 to 10:30 am

Create exciting works of art from around the world using the design element of form.  Projects include African tube dolls, South American rain sticks and papier mache masks.  Teaching Artist:  Lynn Millar

Mad Mosaics  

Recycle wild and wacky items like plastic milk jugs and found objects to create a big, colorful mosaic work of art.

Ceramics:  Clay Goes Pop    

Learn about pop art and create a 3D food inspired sculpture made of clay. Teaching Artist:  Ben McCarthy

Nature Drawing and Journaling   Ages 9 to 14    Cost: $150

Monday through Thursday:  June 14 to June 24 (8 classes)   10:00 to 12 Noon

Recording observations and feelings in a journal can be a powerful way for students to get to know their natural community and the geography of their home environment so that they can develop a sense of caring commitment. This class will guide you to design a journal that will be used to record your observations and personal reflections.  A variety of drawing techniques and creative writing styles will be introduced.  Come join us and be prepared to spend some time outdoors.

Cardboard Castles    Ages 9 to 11             Cost: $120

Monday through Friday:  June 14 to June 18    10:00 am to 12 Noon

Medieval castles were first built to keep out intruders with walls and moats.  Over the years the architects added more technical means of foiling enemies.  Learn how castles were built and how to work with cardboard and junk materials to design and construct your own model castle. Dragons, Princes and Princesses   Ages 8 to 11         Cost: $85

Monday through Friday:  June 14 to June 18       1:00 to 2:30 pm

Come to a fairy tale of a class where you create a wonderful puppet or free standing figure of a fantasy medieval character- be it a prince, a princess or a fire breathing dragon!  Students will draw and plan their characters, decide on structural forms and materials and use the process of papier mache to construct their models which will be finished with paint, fabrics and varnish.

African Dreams   Ages 5 to 10   Cost:  $90

Monday through Wednesday:  June 21, 22, 23   1:00 to 4:00 pm

If you dreamed of Africa, you would dream of a diverse land rich with traditions.  You would encounter many cultures, dance many dances and 

sing many songs.  This class will be inspired by the diversity of  

African arts.  Explore batik, exotic animal sculpture, found object instruments and more. Bring a snack and a water bottle for this virtual arts adventure.  Teaching Artist:  Bonnie Ward     Deadline:  June 14

 

 

G.O.A.L. Girls Opportunities Through Arts and Leadership

Monday through Thursday, June 21 to July 1   9:00 am to 4:00 pm    $400

Students entering 6th.through 9th. grade in fall 2010*

A unique program for girls encouraging artistic development and personal growth through arts workshops led by several local women artists and integrated leadership activities.

What inspiration awaits you when you begin to look around you at the natural world. Discover and explore using  found objects from nature to create unique sculptures and wall hangings.

Robots!   Ages 6 to 12   $25

Create outrageous robots from found objects, wire, and other metal and mechanical menagerie.

Body Collage

Create life-sized self-portraits using an assortment of collected materials and media and the technique of collage.

Big and Crazy Sculpture   Ages 6 to 12   Cost:  $90

Monday through Wednesday:  July 5, 6, 7    1:00 to 4:00 pm

Work big in 3D.  In this three day workshop you have the chance to be a sculptor that can transform trash to treasure.  Explore and reinvent, experiment with form, discover and create constructing with man made and natural objects combined with papier mache.  Bring a snack, a water bottle and a smile! Puppy and Kitty Love!  Ages 6 to 11  Cost:  $20

Drawing is fun when you know how to put some simple shapes together.

Create a clay box that’s all about you.  Use texture, words and symbols that express who you are or who you want to be.

Ceramics: Kandinsky Sculptures

Explore the artwork of a famous artist, Kandinsky.  Students will create a 3D clay sculpture inspired by the artists’ abstract paintings with emphasis on line, shape and composition.  Teaching Artist:  Ben McCarthy

Summer Paint Bar Workshops  Ages 6 and up  $25 each   1:00 to 2:30 pm

Color your world with these fun opportunities to encourage your child’s artistic development. Classes will engage the imagination and feelings, and are open-ended with the child in charge of the outcome, whatever that looks like.  This series will place emphasis on engaging and supporting creative thinking.
