William Matthews: masterful watercolor painter, globe-traveler, passionate collector of friends, generous participant in life, and occasional screw-up. As a keen observer of the changing West, Willy has managed to poetically document the cowboys of Nevada’s Great Basin region, known as buckaroos, as well as the stunning landscapes they inhabit. Willy’s great gift is that not only can he capture the particular spirit of a place with a minimalist’s eye, but that he forms intensely human connections with many of his most evocative characters and subjects.

William Matthews: Drawn to Paint follows Willy for his latest winter 2015 Denver Art Museum exhibit titled Trespassing and revisits some of his favorite subjects, reflecting on the world of Western art and our fascination with the West in general.
