Celebrating Ute Culture
Comprised of borrowed materials from the Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum and from private collections. The exhibit will also display traditional Ute tribal arts, including baskets, flutes, leatherwork, parfleche boxes, drums, and beadwork, produced by contemporary Ute artists, which will be offered for sale.
There will be a 12-foot traditional Native American tipi installed in the Barbara Conrad Gallery. Ute storytelling will take place on a daily basis inside the tipi for school groups. Interested school groups should contact the DAC for scheduling. Three films, “Gathering Willows,” “Song of the Basket,” and “Ute Legacy” will play continuously in the Gallery from 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Thursday through Saturday.

Traditional Ute Bead Working Workshop
Instructor: Linda K. Baker
Date: May 18
Time: 10:00 A.M -noon, 1-3 P.M.
Where: DAC Education Studio
Class size: 10
Age and ability: Open to all ages and ability.
Cost: $50.00/person, which includes four (4) hours of instruction, and a pouch or moccasin kit.
Class description: The class will include a short introduction to styles and tribal affiliation of beadwork styles. A choice of either a small beaded pouch or beaded baby moccasins, along with beading instructions, will be taught. All materials will be supplied, which includes thread, needles, beads, and brain-tanned buckskin.

Exhibit Juror: Gloria Jean Countryman
Countryman began her art career and education as an oil painter in Texas over 30 years ago at Dick Turner School of Art, Corpus Christi. Since her residency in Colorado in 1984, she has added watercolor, pastels, mixed media and acrylics to her palette. Her work has been shown in many local to international competitions and exhibits often receiving top awards: W/C Art Society of Houston; Pikes Peak W/C Society; Red River W/C Society; Kansas W/C Society; Nat’l League of American Pen Women; Boulder, Durango and Colorado Springs Art Guilds; So Colo W/C Society; Zonta Women’s Exhibit; Canon City’s Annual Blossom Exhibit; and more.

Plein Air Oil Workshop for Beginners with Judy DeVincentis Morgan

Judy welcomes interested artists to learn how to paint in the great outdoors. Learn to capture the beautiful surrounding views of mountains, rivers and valleys on canvas. Class will take place in the Animas Valley. The class will focus on composition, values, & color.

Washi & Other Ephemera: The Art of Hand Papermaking
Curator: Mary Ellen Long. Visiting artist, Timothy D. Barrett, is an american papermaker, and director of the Center for the Book, at the University of Iowa. In 2009 he received a MacArthur Foundation genius grant.
