Comedic Identity: Character & Persona

Sunday, May 17, 2026

CLASS DESCRIPTION

There’s often a gap between how we see ourselves as comics and how an audience reads us, and identifying and writing to that gap is often where some really funny material can emerge.

You’ll bring in five minutes of your best material, defined as: sets that feel most like you, that you’re proud of, your strongest material, OR that you want to understand better.

Over four hours, we’ll cover:

  • Running your set with group observation and structured one-on-one feedback
  • Notes on your comedic comps (which comics to study who might illuminate something about your own voice)
  • Identifying the areas of your persona that are working and worth leaning into harder
  • An honest look at jokes you love that aren’t landing and why
  • The intersection of who you are, how you’re perceived, and what you actually want to say, and how to work with all three

We’re not looking to change who you are on stage, but rather, understand it clearly enough to use it to strengthen what you’re doing.

  • Experience required: Some standup experience (you’ve performed at open mics before or taken a class, like Standup 101, and have written at least 5 minutes of material)
