Exploring Landscape Painting in Soft Pastels (August)

Tuesday, August 18, 2026

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Join artist Yvonne Holland for a 2-hour beginner-friendly summer workshop exploring the beauty and versatility of soft pastel. Inspired by the dramatic landscape references students bring or the ones the class provides, students will learn foundational pastel techniques including layering color, creating atmosphere, and capturing light and texture in the landscape.

Through step-by-step guidance and demonstrations, participants will create their own pastel landscape while gaining confidence in composition, blending, and color theory. Whether you are completely new to pastel or looking to reconnect with your creativity, this relaxed and supportive class offers an enjoyable introduction to landscape painting.

Yvonne has been passionately involved in the Fine Arts since childhood. Her love of drawing, painting, photography, pottery and music have propelled her through life. She attended both St. Lawrence University and Arizona State University, where she received her master’s degree. After teaching Art in the public schools for over three decades in Arizona, the San Juan Mountains beckoned. The striking landscapes of Southern Colorado have been an inspiration to interpret in pastel.

She divides her time between plein air painting, throwing functional stoneware pottery, teaching students and practicing Celtic fiddle. Each Sunday, she and her husband play music at the Durango Celtic Session.
